This is an early example of American glassmaking - a smaller sized lidded compote with a fantastic squirrel finial. It is of triple mold construction and has survived many decades in fairly good condition with two potential exceptions that I will outline in a minute. Rather than my trying to describe all of the presswork on this item just please review the pictures. They will indeed tell you a thousand words and better than I can describe. This item even has press work in the center of its bottom portion which unveils a nice surprise when the lid is lifted. And the detailing on the squirrel finial is incredible - all the way down to the nut which it is holding to its mouth. The item measures five inches in height when lidded. The measurements of the bottom piece (allowing for rounded corners) are just about 6 1/2 inches long by five inches in width. This bottom is showing only one tiny flea bite to the inner edge of the rim. It is virtually impossible to detect unless turned into the right light. Otherwise it is completely free-of-damage. The lid has an area which I have imaged closely for you on its rim lip w t is what I believe to be a straw mark. I can catch the line with my fingernail slightly and it does NOT travel through to the top of the lip. It is BENEATH the lip. Forever some will argue that it is a crack and others a straw mark so I have to let you be the judge. But to me it is a straw mark. This area is about 3/4 inches in length and again is barely discernible without clinical study. I want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase. Tfore I call out these two issues with this item and while I view them to be at best minor ones you need to be the judge. But I do know that if you are looking for a great addition to your early pressed glass collection this old timer is just the one for you. Thanks for looking and best of luck should you decide to bid!
