Early Peter Muller Carved Gemstone& Crystal Kingfisher Birds

The origin of these beautiful birds was a mystery to me until I discovered the internationally known artist Peter Muller while doing an internet search for “carved gemstone birds.” His name continued to pop up & I noticed similarities between my piece & those of his that I was seeing online. There was no “signature” nor definitive mark that I could detect to identify the artist with certainty.

I then contacted Mr. Muller’s studio & included photos of this piece and what I knew of its history. What I did know is that it was purchased from a gift shop at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York about 1987 – 1988.

I was very pleased to receive the following detailed reply from Peter’s wife, Teja Muller, identifying my sculpture as one of Peter’s, as well as a list of all of the stones used in the piece, and what the piece would sell for today.

Thank you for your email.

This is really a very early piece of Peter.

I cannot trace it anymore because my sistem started a lot later then 1987.

The birds in the picture are kingfishers .

The blue stone is blue quartz

The green stone we call serpentine

The orange stone is orange calcite

The white is white Dolomite

The beaks are agate

The eyes are garnet

The feet I cannot see if they are metal or silver, we use silver

The base is Tourmaline in matrix of the Urubu-mine in Araçuaí, Minas Gerais-Brazil

If we would make this piece TODAY with these stones (we wouldn't use these stones anymore), the price in the store would be $2,500 to $3000 .

In the Walldorf Astoria probably about $4000 .

As I am in the process of down sizing I am liquidating many of my collections. Please see my OTHER ITEMS for sale for what else is currently listed. I would like to give someone else the opportunity to enjoy such a beautiful sculpture, capturing Nature’s creatures in the beautiful stones and crystals of our planet.

Although this piece is currently wrapped & stored, I can provide some approximate idea of the size.

Individual birds: approx. 4” to 5” in length

Overall size: approx. 7” to 8” in length x 5” to 6” in height

Weight: approx. 7 lbs.

I would be happy to provide exact information to serious bidders.

The birds have very detailed metal feet which have a very natural looking bronze finish. The birds are removable from the quartz base.
