Early 20th century violin withcase & bow - Rushworth & Dreaper Liverpool I have for sale an old violin in the case with a nice bow. I am no expert in musical instruments so I am just basically describing things that I can see with my own two eyes and giving an honest opinion regarding condition etc. However please see the photos I have uploaded and feel free to ask me any questions you may have prior to bidding as my opinion may not be the same as yours. Label on inside of case states: Rushworth & Dreaper Musical Instrument Makers 11-17 Islington Liverpool Stamp on Violin states: J. RAI The violin still seems to be in very good condition to me anyhow with some scuffing around the edges in a few places and some light scrape marks from age / use, I have been told that a good clean and it being re-polished would really enhance this instruments appearance, however I am just selling it as you see it. The tail of the violin that the strings are attached to has been beautifully finished with inlaid mother pearl in the form of a rose or flower. Someone has also stuck three little strips of paper onto the neck, these could be easily be dampened and removed. The violin has no label or other details inside it that I can see, I have checked even with a torch, the only thing I can see on it is the stamped words or letters J RAI on the underisde where teh strings are tightened - please see photos. There are strings on the violin and it comes with a bridge marked AUBERT however the strings may need replaced or may just work as they are if the bridge is fitted I haven’t tried it. It also comes with a Boosey & Hawkes Excelsior Rosin block. The case is still good for the use it was intended for and the two clasps for closing it still work fine, one of these is lockable, but there is no key. It is however unlocked and working, there is also a little thumb and finger turn swivel outer ring on the lock that when turn keeps it locked. The case is also fine still inside as you can see with the Rushworth & Dreaper label, still present. It does have light age related wear to the light blue inner covering, this is nothing to worry about. The black outer coating has scuffing and wear to the edges with some fraying in places, but is still solid and fine for use. Please note that one of the little attachments for fixing a bow is detached, but could be re-fixed. The other one is still present and is holding the bow in as shown in a photograph. The case also has scuffing to the outside just from being used over the years, but is still fine for purpose. The bow that comes with this violin is beautifully made (in my opinion) with mother of pearl pieces and possibly solid silver (though unmarked) fittings as photographed. The bow seems in very good condition as shown, just one hair strand is snapped and hangs down, I don’t know if these would usually be cut / trimmed off if snapped like this, but I am just mentioning the single snapped one and selling as described. There is also a tiny little corner of mother of pearl misisng from the underside, this is only a tiny piece, see sphotos. The violin also comes with a chin rest as photographed, this is not actually attached to the violin but is there and included in the sale, what you see in the photos is exactly what you will receive. The overall length of the instrument is approx 24” the neck is approx 15” and the width t the widest part at the bottom below the rib is approx 8”.
