GUNMETAL BLACK POTTERY SALEI have been collecting pottery in the so called "gunmetal black" glaze for several years now and have roughly 100 pieces. Most of it is from North Carolina and dates from the 1920's to 1986. I would undoubtedly have more if this glaze was more common.I recently accepted a new job in Atlanta and will be moving t at the beginning of April. This is good for me, but unfortunately for various reasons I have decided to part with most of my collection. I will be keeping a few small pieces and whatever that doesn't sell in this round of auctions. "Gunmetal Black" is a term that is often used to describe any black or gray glaze with a metallic appearance. In actually, a true gunmetal black glaze on North Carolina pottery is rarely seen. One definition of gunmetal is, "a dark gray or blackish color with bluish or purplish tinge," like a barrel of a gun or even an oil slick. As you might see in my listings this week, most do not fall under this definition. All do have a metallic finish, though. They range from a matte steel gray to a high gloss, deep iridescent black and everything in between. Of the 100 or so pieces that I have, only 4 or 5 would fall under the definition quoted above, one from JB Cole and the rest from AR Cole.
