I have always been intriqued with this box as to what purpose it served. It is an early slide top candle box or storage box that at some point was altered to insert an old mirror in the top. The mirror is definitely old and is covered on the back with an old piece of cheesecloth, as shown in the photo. My best guess is that it was used as a makeshift shaving kit or some sort of container for toiletries, soap, etc, perhaps used by a soldier at war or a traveling vendor. It appears to have had some water staining on one side, so maybe it was just kept in a washhouse or bathroom for daily use. Whatever its purpose, it has a wonderful dry, crazed surface in beautiful old blue paint with appropriate wear and patina. The paint just couldn't be better. Construction is with early wire tiny staples of some sort . It is 10 inches by 5 1/2 wide and it is 5 1/2 inches tall. Please view my other auctions for more country smalls in old paint.
