You are bidding on one Stanley #72 chamfer plane as pictured. It is marked "STANLEY" on the left side and "No 72" on the right side, and "STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO PAT APR 21 85" on the cutter. This would be the Type 2 in Walter's book, with the early brass adjusting wheel to adjust the front half of the body, which would date it from 1886 to 1904.Condition is very good. T are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything operates properly. The rear handle has some small chips at the tip, and the front knob has a couple of dots of white paint to clean off. I would guess that at least 90% of the japanning remains, but it has dulled. The bare metal surfaces are mostly clean, with some light patina (color) but no rust or pitting or anything even close. The brass thumbwheel is intact, and thankfully, has never been cleaned or overcleaned. With a light cleaning and some TLC, this would be a very showy plane. This is one of a number of auctions of Stanley and other similar metallic planes that I have listed right now. Please see my other current as well as upcoming auctions, as I am or will be listing many more collectible planes and tools. I typically list in batches of similar tools, and sitting right now in the queue are even more metal planes, many American and British molders, chisels and gouges, some read more
