You are looking at an extremely rare 19 th Century intertwined serpent candle holder made of opalescent and calcedonio glass. Unfortunatelly it had broken in half over the years and it was badly glued back together but it should still be possible to have it restored by a professional. The design is very unusual and it must have required an extremely skilled craftsman to create the twisted serpent stem in the brief time the molten glass can be formed. T is no picture reference that I can find in my venetian glass books but from information listed in the "Confections in Glass" book by Sheldon Barr, Guiseppe and Benvenuto Barovier were known to create complicated and elaborate animal character pieces including serpents, dragons, dolphins, winged horses and swans during the late 1800's much to the envy of other, more conservative glass makers. Any information or feedback on the design is very welcome. Measurements are 8.25" (21 cm) height with 3.5" X 3" (9cm X 7.5 cm) serpent stem, 4.5" diameter for the base. The top and bottom rim are decorated with a ribbon of pink calcedonio glass which has the same coloring as the serpent. To confirm the early manufacture, t are ash inclusions and the opalescent glass exposes a fiery amber glow when held against a light source. Please feel free to contact me with questions or for additional photos as it would take too long to describe the candle holder in full detail. Shipping charges will be based on destination and tracking within the US is provided free of charge. Thank You for your interest and Good Luck bidding.
