Up for auction is this terrific, early General Electric type A-23 electrical heat lamp, circa 1904. I'm not an expert on electrical lighting of such an early vintage, so any assistance would be appreciated, as always. The lamp is marked on top of base, in front of the sockets, "GEN. ELEC. CO. (GE logo) TYPE A-23 Schenectady, N.Y., U.S.A.", as shown. Recently obtained, with original period bulbs and cord/plug...and it's in working condition. Note the wonderful early plug...with large, thick contacts fashioned in a horizontal manner, versus today's vertical position. The electrical cord is also fascinating and is complete...with just two sections of the outer cloth braid being worn away. But what this reveals is the great early, braided, cloth insulation on the wires. The base is steel, and retains the original finish that's in excellent condition with very minimal wear. No dents. Copper-plate reflector shows minimal wear. All wood feet are intact on the legs that are very accurate for the Art Nouveau-era. The bulbs (hand blown?) are beautiful...and each has matching marks on the sockets of "PATENTED NOV.8.1904 NOV.22.1904". Prior to testing the lamp I unscrewed the bulbs...and heard a little rattling of something inside each. I figured it was the filaments, but when I plugged it in they obviously work...and actually work very strong. The heat radiated was almost instant. I then removed the bulbs in order to figure out what was rattling. I could see through the small band of clear glass, adjacent to the sockets, that each bulb has a small rod of glass of some sort, about the diameter of a toothpick...and approximately an inch or so in length. I have no idea what these are, since the bulbs have no chips or cracks. The glass points of the bulbs are complete, with no chips or cracks. I would think t can't be many of these bulbs still fresh to the market these days. This is a beautiful piece of General Electric and electrical-technology science history that I wish to get into the right hands. Please let me know if you require additional information. Please note that the bulbs will ship in a second box, and will be well packed. However, I cannot guarantee that the two, 104 year-old filaments will survive...so I will not be held responsible, nor will I issue any refunds, in the case of a broken filament. Local pick-up in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago is always welcomed, at no charge, and we're very flexible on days/times. We can also hold this for you if you'll be in the area at a future date, but please confirm duration before bidding...and payment would still be due within 7 days. Professional packaging AND insured shipping to the continental United States will be $34. Alaska, Hawaii & International bidders please contact us for a quote. Why Buy New?
