We have for auction an original Western States Cutlery (Western ) fixed blade hunting knife & leather belt carry case. This is a nice vintage Western States knife! WOW!! You don't see the older ones like this. Nice high quality knife! We're not sure of the exact age of this one, but we think we can get you close with the research we did. The tang stamp is "Western States" as a rainbow over "Boulder Colo." below and "Pat Pending" below that. The reverse is just marked Western. If you're lucky enough to see any Western States fixed blade knives of this period they are very, very well used. This one is quite nice and well preserved with lots of condition. We are unsure of it's actual age but this tang stamp was Western States Cutlery's first tang stamp style used from it's inception in 1911. It is our understanding that the first fixed blade hunting knives were introduced into the market in 1928 shortly t after in 1931 Patent numbers wre added to the tang stamps. Given this is a Patent pending model it must have been manufactured within the first 3 years of production. Given this information is correct, this is one of the very first fixed blade knives ever made by Western States Cutlery. T's a good clear photo of the tang stamp(s) with enlargement capabilities. So we'll let the experts be the judge of it's age. Beautiful knife in any case. It comes complete with the original leather belt carry case in excellent original condition with good tight stitching and a good retaining snap. This knife has a 4 3/4" blade and measures 8 3/4" in total length. Fit and craftsmanship is very nice, just what you would expect from craftsmen of this period. This knife appears used showing signs of age and it has been sharpened and probably cleaned at some point in its long life. We have never seen a Western Or Western States Cutlery knife with handles like this. They are original! The handles are made of beautiful bone or possibly Ivory (free of cracks) and layered on top of red & black liners. Most early Western States knives had leather or synthetic handles. Very unusual!!!
