Early Wood Sign Orig. Paint Portrait Art Antique OOAK

I am pleased to offer this exceptional estate sale find. This fine piece was found at an estate sale in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. It hung in a historic inn for over one hundred years. T were three portraits in the collection. It has a rich and diverse history which only adds to its undeniable character and charm. This is a portrait which was entirely hand painted on a sturdy piece of wood. The portrait is of British sea captain, John Stockman. He was the captain of the Thunderer. After some research I did locate some information regarding this gentleman and his life is very interesting. (it was a little too much information to include in the listing.) The sign reads in gorgeous cursive, "Captain John Stockman of Her Majestic Royal Navy made Commander of the Thunderer." This is written in bold white and seems to pop from the deep navy background. Below, John is painted with a most serious expression, bold, upright and confident. He wears a deep red coat with yellow buttons and a bold white scarf above a green collar. He has been painted with amazing attention to detail with amazing facial features. This is a museum quality collectors piece. It is an original work of art and you will never see another. It retains its original paint with no damage of any kind which is remarkable. Would look marvelous over a mantle, antique hutch or simply resting against the wall on the floor. Lots of possibilities. This auction is for the one portrait only, but the others are also listed. They do make a wonderful collection. Signed and dated on the back, but it is very hard to read. Measures a generous 33 by 20 inches. I am pleased to say that this piece is offered at a low starting price and no reserve. Please feel free to email me with any questions or for additional photos. Thank you for looking.
