6 3/4 Inches Tall Transitional Pearlware Pitcher with Green Rouletting, Continuous Looped Earthworm Slip Trailing, Cats Eyes Circles, Three Broad Slip Washes Grounds and Eight Dark Mocha Brown Bands from about 1835 (AS IS) Pitcher (for sale flanked by a seaweed yelloware chamber pot and seaweed tankard (tankard and chamber pot for visual comparison only and not for sale ITEM DETAILS: Although this pitcher has lost 90% of its spout and nearly all of its handle except the terminals (see all photos), it is restorable if you wish to pursue that route. And professionally restored large pitchers like this one can still command $1,200 to $1,800 and more. Recent auction have brought up to $4,800 for less than perfect mocha pitchers with rouletting, cat's eyes and earthworms motifs on a single vessel. So if you would rather invest in reparable mocha than today's stock market or real estate property, then this may be just the item for you. This pitcher is a late transitional pearlware example with a nice combination of slip trailed motifs, rouletting and banding dating from the 1825 to 1845 period. And what makes this pitcher particularly stand out despite the damage is its nearly symmetrical baluster shape (just the spread foot break up the symmetry), the two rouletted bands highlighted in green and the use of a fine creamware yellow slip for accenting the cat's eyes. Also, the broad burnt orange slip colored ground provides a strong background for accenting the cable motif (i.e., earthworm design). And the looping earthworm design is expertly trailed w the starting point is rejoined so that the pattern remains continuous. The handle was purposely positioned to cover the rejoined part of the pattern even though it is continuous. And the spout was positioned so that it is flanked by two loops and looks symmetrically centered. Finally, the cat's eyes bands at the spout were applied before the spout was cut out and applied since one can see the partial edge of a cat's eye subsequently obliterated by the added spout. In all, five different colored slips were used to decorate this pitcher: light blue, white, and dark chocolate brown were used on both the cat's eyes and earthworm motifs, the same dark chocolate brown slip was used to make the eight dark brown bands, a dark cream colored slip was used to make the two smaller banded washes (1 inch wide bands) for the cat's eyes and a burnt orange slip for the largest background band. Finally, the white slip used for the cat's eyes and earthworm motifs was also applied to the spout and the handle because it can also be seen covering the other applied bands and motifs next to the handle terminals. This pitcher still displays well depending on how one places it on a shelf. From some angles, it looks like a baluster jar until one sees the handle ends. One photo shows this pitcher next to a large blue mocha yellowware chamber pot and a brown seaweed banded tankard for visual comparisons (chamber pot and tankard are not for sale The pitcher for sale does not have any stamped makers marks or pottery names and this is typical for more than 99.999% of all mocha style slipwares. Many British factories produced these banded and slipped wares mostly between 1800 and 1850 including hundreds of potteries in the greater Staffordshire, Leeds, Swansea and Yorkshire pottery districts. So if you are looking for a damaged but respectable pitcher in AS IS condition (see condition notes below), then do consider this one while it is still available. This pitcher also comes with my full satisfaction guarantee, too or you may return it using my return policy as explained below.
