EASTERN EUROPEAN CHATELAINE This interesting piece was given to me by a friend who had travelled through Russia, the Ukraine, and the Balkans on a single trip which lasted many months. She was not sure exactly w she'd found it and couldn't tell me anything about it. Obviously it's been used by someone, perhaps more than one someone, for a long time, and perhaps indeed a lifetime or two to judge by its condition. I surmise that the big jump ring (on the back) originally held keys on chains, and maybe a knife...and a leather strap formed the actual belt. The buckle is 3-3/8" long; the oval centerpiece is 1-1/4" from top to bottom. The buckle is very heavy! STERLING? The buckle is not marked and maybe was created in a small community w metal purity marks were not common or w artisans' use of this metal was taken for granted. To me it looks like what we call sterling, or pretty close to 925% pure silver. The cruciform floral designs suggest a Christian culture but one in which ancient images persist in art of folk origin as this piece appears to be. W the designs have not been worn off, t is black enamel that appears to be inlaid into depressions in the metal.
