EASTERN NATIVE AMERICAN GUSTOWEH HEADDRESS REGALIA This quality, well made headdress was handmade by a member of the Laconia Indian Historical Association located in Laconia, New Hampshire. It was made with care by a non-tribal affiliated Native American. The Gustoweh was originally worn by the HAUDENOSHAUNEE, also Known as the Iroquois, but soon became popular with many of the Eastern Woodland Tribes. The main large feathers are hand straightened large turkey wing spike feathers, hand painted to look like eagle spike feathers, with white rabbit fur accents and black horsrhair on the tips. The cap is decorated in a traditional "messy" style with turkey, hackle, seagull, grouse, pheasant, and black and white fluff feathers. Some of the feathers are purposely split for a traditional full effect. The crown is made of birch bark wrapped with hide. It is decorated with a leather strap and brass star tack work, with a brass type floral center piece. The drops begin with a brass type button. Pinkish-purple ribbon hangs from them with a hide thong to secure the headdress to your head. Red horsehair hangs from the back decorated with white fluff feather. T is also a wool drop hanging from the back decorated with large brass tacks. The headdress fits head size of approximatly 7 1/2 or smaller. It will be smudged with sage before it read more
