For Sale is a very unique and large Northeastern Native American made ash basket. I have been collecting Northeast Native made baskets for many years, and have never seen another one like this, and I have never seen another one shaped like this, and of course , the "Black Hand" imprint is totally one of a kind, and quite a discussion piece! This is a big, heavy basket measuring 15 inches tall, it's circumference at it's largest point (around the opening) is a whopping 36 inches, and the width at the opening is 12 inches across. It is in excellent shape, very few minor breaks, which I will describe below and have also provided photos of every break. I purchased this basket years ago at a country flea market in Northern Vermont. The other unique things about this basket, other than the shape, is a hand print in black tar on the side of this basket, which only adds to this basket's unique history. The story goes that this basket was stored in a big old barn, and the men were tarring the roof many years ago-one of them reached for this basket, and left his hand print on it in black tar. My hand fits over this spot perfectly. I cannot figure out what this basket was used for , it is VERY heavy duty, unlike decorative baskets sold to tourists, this was obviously a work basket.
