Easton Press FULL leather edition of Henry F. Pringle's "The Life and Times of William Howard Taft: A Biography," Volome II, one of the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1986. Bound in a Most Handsome brown Moroccan cowhide leather, the book has decorative end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edge---in FINE condition. William Howard Taft, who lived from 1857-1930, was born in OHIO, the son of JUDGE ALPHONSO TAFT, a prominent Rebulican who was both Attorney General and Secretary of War under Ohioian President Grant. William graduated from YALE and Cincinnati Law School. He became a state judge, U.S. Solicitor General and finally Dean of the UNIVERSITY of CINCINNATI LAW SCHOOL. Taft was a man of singular integrity and great accomplishment, including the establishment of a model colonial government in the American Philippines and he oversaw the construction of the PANAMA CANAL. Volume 2 cover the life of the only man who ever served as President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. This volume covers Theodore Roosevelt's run for President of the short-lived "BULL MOOSE" Party, splitting the Republican vote and ultimately dooming Taft to defeat by WOODROW WILSON. Taft told President Wilson, "I'm glad to be going. This is the lonesomest place in the world." Taft became professor of constitutional law at Yale University and was elected president of the American Bar Association. In 1921, Taft was appointed by fellow another Ohioian, PRESIDENT WARREN HARDING as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, a position in which Taft exerted distinguished leadership.
