Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter Signed Spacious Skies Easton Press Hardback Book!
Scott Carpenter is one of the four surviving original Mercury astronauts. In 1959, he and six other peers were selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to be astronauts in the newly fledgling space program. After John Glenn's historic orbital flight in February of 1961, Carpenter was named to man the second orbital mission when a heart problem grounded Deke Slayton. On May 24, 1961 Carpenter blasted into space in his Mercury capsule Aurora 7 atop an Atlas rocket. The flight had a number of glitches that are described in his book. The end result was that Carpenter was forced to re-enter the earth's atmosp out of maneuvering fuel and some 250 miles off from his landing sight. After a frantic search by recovery forces, Carpenter was calmly resting in a life raft besides his capsule. Carpenter landed a foul of the NASA brass and never flew in space again. This is his story, from growing up in Colorado, to his naval career, to his selection to the astronaut corps, to his celebrated flight. Co-authored with his daughter Kris Stoever, the book has a polished, professional tone thanks to Ms. Stoever's journalism career. It is a delightful read and gives the reader a different perspective of the flight of Aurora 7. Item is a MINT condition Easton Press Publication of Spacious Skies (370 pages with photographs and index). Carpenter and co-author Kristen Stoever have boldly signed the title page.
