Ebony Instrument Maker Smooth Plane This little wooden smooth plane is perfect for instrument maker working on small scale projects. When the size of project you are working on is smaller than your regular size planes, this tool comes in handy. The plane is made of a single piece of macassar ebony, very hard wood that often has beautiful grain configurations. The iron is cut from special tool steel, very hard (>62 Rc) and also very tough. The iron is not honed when the plane arrives, you will need to hone the blade with you own preferred sharpening method. Do it slowly and a good quality honing jig is a must for this size of iron. As for all wooden products, please wait for a few weeks before tuning the plane body. The wood has been properly dried prior to making. If you are in a place with extreme climate condition, apply a light coat of wax to the plane body regularly will help. This is a high quality precision woodworking tool.
