ECE Smoothing PLANE with lignum vitae sole Presented for your woodworking pleasure is a nice smoothing plane made by the ECE company. This smoothing plane has a blade that is 1 7/8" (48mm) wide and is similar in size and function to the Stanley #4. This plane has seen only slight use. The laminated steel blade is near full length and is 1/8" thick. It is stamped 48 CHR.-VAN ECE W. GERMANY. The outside of this blade has some brown staining, but no rust or corrosion. It includes a very stout chipbreaker. I flattened the back, honed the edge, and stropped to remove the wire. Now the blade is sharp enough to shave with. The lignum sole is in outstanding shape except for a few light scratches and shows that this plane received little use. The mouth of the plane is tight (about 1/64"), as you can see in the picture and this plane cuts light, wispy shavings which you can see in the picture. If you have never used a plane with a lignum sole, you are in for a treat. The wood is naturally oily and that feature makes the sole glide across your project like it has been greased. Lignum is also hard and dense so the sole wears like iron. In all, this is a nice plane which works exceptionally well. Just look at the shavings I pulled. It will take your work to a whole new level. BONUS Adjuster Mallet Included! When I got serious about woodworking, read more
