Probably one of the best of the artist's portrait studies of the Postal commemorative series. this one of FDR posed with an aircraft carrier in combat operations (possibly Battle Of Midway) in the background. One of several paintings done by Ed Vebell in the late 1980s and early 90s for The Postal Commemorative Society which produced first day covers for stamps that were issued to commemorate specific notable events and individuals in American history. The art offered is the original painting that the Commemorative Society used to produce the matching first day cover. The paintings are done on artist board and are all generally around 14" X 16", give or take. They were all done over a span of about four years and vary somewhat insofar as some have their accompanying first day cover, with or without stamps (I think these are particularly desirable), some have protective tissue and paper covering and most have a bit of adhesive near the tops w the artist put the protective paper before sending to the printer (easily removed) but all the actual art is pristine and unblemished ready for matting and framing. Each painting was painstakingly researched, set up as a photo shoot and executed by Ed, very often using friends and neighbors as well as himself as models posing in original costumes and carrying original weapons and equipment from Ed's extensive collection. I will attempt to list a few of several that I have but if you have any specific favorite times in history or subjects, e mail me as I may have a painting you'd like and will list on Ebay immediately. ED VEBELLI have always heard that when making a written or spoken presentation, one should do so in as few words as possible so as not to lose your audience. At the risk of 'losing my audience,' I feel I must be descriptive enough to at least touch on the many facets and achievements in the life of the man who painted this and other paintings that I'll be selling for my very good friend, Ed Vebell. Ed is a member of "The Greatest Generation," a veteran of WW 2 in the European Theater and is now in his 80's and thankfully, healthy, hearty and very active. He started life in Chicago, the son of hardworking Lithuanian parents. He attended art school at the age of 14 and won three scholarships, demonstrating an ability that became his trademark within the community of illustrators that he would eventually arrive at the top of. His ability as a draftsman, or simply superb drawing skills is what got him recognized in those early prewar days and generated a career as an illustrator that saw him as "never being out of work" from when as a teenager in the 1930s he earned $350.00 a week to the present day when he has grudgingly entered semi retirement. When the war broke out, Ed enlisted and the Army, in it's great wisdom, put him into a camouflage company - "a painter is a painter" in the eyes of the Army. Ed was probably saved from combat injury or worse when quite by accident he joined the Army publication "The Stars And Stripes" as a combat artist. A role he enjoyed for almost four years, seeing action in Italy, Algeria and France. Ed also had the distinction of serving a dual role in a similar capacity with Yank Magazine. During these years till war end, he was a photographer as well as an artist and on assignments, met many of the very famous personalities of the times and being a tall, good looking young man Ed enjoyed the company of many Hollywood starlets as well as Edith Piaf and my favorite, Josephine Baker, the American Black Chanteuse who became the toast of Paris. Ed knew and kept company with the likes of Bill Mauldin, Andy Rooney and many other famous personalities. He wore the uniform of a journalist which gave him officer status in billeting and other privileges - even though he was but a lowly enlisted man. He enjoyed riding with the French Cavalry, boxing and fencing (a sport he was later to excel in) and just generally living a life Hemingway and Ca...
