Greetings. You are bidding on a limited edition slip-cased set of three (3) hardcover books titled “THE EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS LIBRARY OF ILLUSTRATION (Limited Centennial Edition)” . Publication Information: “Conceived, designed, edited and published” by Russ Cochran over an eight year span (1976-1984), this set includes three (3) hardcover books. Each book is 12.25” tall by 9.25” wide, and each is a first (and only) edition and first (and only) printing. ISBN 0919695302. The books are bound in cream-colored cloth with leather inset and gilt lettering. The front cover of each has a color artwork plate laid in. Simply stunning design and the highest quality execution and presentation. A virtuoso example of the art of bookmaking which was released in conjunction with the centennial of Burrough's birth in 1876. Each volume in the set was printed in a limited and numbered edition of two thousand (2,000) copies each. This particular set is of matching numbers, and each book is hand-numbered “195” on the rear of title page. The set is contained in a brown leatherette bound slipcase with gilt spine lettering issued exclusively with the set. Depending upon when you purchased the volumes, the original retail price was $50 to $60 per volume. Description : These large folio-style volumes are nothing short of a labor of love by Russ Cochran, and the ultimate collection of Burroughs art and illustrations. Each volume includes critical essays, excerpts from the novels, and hundreds of color and black and white illustrations (many full page and there are several fold-out multi-page illustrations) of Burroughs’ classic characters, TARZAN, JOHN CARTER of MARS, DEJAH THORIS, CARSON of VENUS, THE MOON MAID, DAVID INNES (of Pellucidar and At The Earth’s Core) and many others. Taken from books, pulps, comic books and comic strips, no stone was left unturned to present the ultimate collection of Burroughs art and illustration. Volume One (271 pages) is dedicated to, and features the art of, J. Allen St. John , whom many consider to be the greatest Burroughs artist. Includes the 9/1/76 letter from Russ Cochran which originally accompanied the shipment of the book. Volume Two (305 pages) features the art of John Coleman Burroughs and Harold “Hal” Foster , including numerous Tarzan daily and Sunday comic strips, comic book stories, and paintings. Includes the 8/11/77 letter from Russ Cochran which originally accompanied the book. Volume Three (247 pages) features the art of Burne Hogarth , Other Burroughs Comic Artists, Jesse Marsh, Rex Mason, Russ Manning, J. Allen St. John, Frank Schoonover, Morris Gollub, Mahlon Blaine, Roy Krenkel , Ed Emsh, Reed Crandall and Frank Frazetta , including numerous Tarzan Sunday comic strips, comic book stories, illustrations and paintings. Condition: The books are in “fine” condition, from a smoke free home. I would call them “like new” but for some brown spotting (foxing?) on the covers of all 3 volumes and the top page edges of volumes 1 and 2. It is not bad, but it is noticeable. It does not affect the interior pages or art. Otherwise, the books are in very nice condition. There is no writing in or on the books. The spines are straight and the bindings are tight. No dust jackets, as issued. The slip-case, which holds all 3 volumes, is also in “fine” condition with moderate wear and minor cracking to the lower back edge. Commentary : The greatest art monograph of the latter part of the 20 th century. It simply does not get any better than this. Rarely seen on the market, cause once you own it, you won’t want to let it go. The ultimate collection for Burroughs fans or collectors. Don’t let this one pass you by! This deal is not to be missed. Offered at no reserve at an amazing starting price. Compare with the 2 other complete sets currently on ebay offered at $750-$800. A partial set of 2 volumes (no slip case) is offered @ $400.
