A nice First Edition of this large and beautifully illustrated book showcasing the great etchings of Edward Borein, most of them depicting, cowboys, stagecoaches, frontier towns, Indians, etc of the Wild West. A handsome, very big book offering 318 illustrations, most of them full-page plates. This book is solid and complete and in excellent condition, and it has been inscribed by the publisher. Published nearly 40 years ago, this book is now long out-of-print and quite scarce, usually selling for between $150 and $300. Such a nice copy is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. From the Introduction: "It has been many years since I first encountered both Ed Borein and Warren Howell; in fact, it was Warren Howell who introduced me to the work of Borein when he told me of this artist, who had specialized in drawing the Old West. Later, I was to learn that Ed Borein did much more than "draw the American West." I was to come to know that he was both a great artist and a person with an extraordinary dexterity that allowed him to create in any medium he chose. He painted in oils and water colours, he produced etchings, he could do all the work an oldtime cowboy was supposed to be able to do, such as the tanning of hides, the cutting and plaiting of leather, the making of lariats and the decoration of jackets, all fashioned with the skill of a true virtuoso. Now I have come to consider Ed Borein as the perfect artist of the American West. This is not high praise, but a recognition of the fact that he lived in a time that made him unique. Borein lived his artistic life, working first as a cowboy on cattle ranches, doing a true day's work as a skilled cowpuncher. The people he drew, though they existed in his imagination, were well founded in reality, particularly the Indians who once rode freely over the West and across America's desert lands, and cowboys who mustered cattle of a long horned breed that no longer roam the range lands of the United States.
