I love Edward Gorey's work. Ever since I was a kid in NYC. My favorite thing was always the opening of the PBS Mystery Series. Okay, Gene Shallit was a fool, or the people who cast him as the host were fools, but the shows were great and I loved to hum the theme & watch the Gorey/Lamb graphics. It was my subway mantra from 125th to 59th. But, I digress. Once upon a time in the 1980s I bought myself a really cool Edward Gorey Mystery Tote bag. I used it all the time, back in the day when you were trusted enough to bring work home with you. In the days before personal copiers and cell phones. You know, back when there was carbon paper. I used to stuff it with files and my handbag and my umbrella and all of the other importantly useless things that women drag around with them. One day, a blue pen escaped its cap and bled onto my fabulous Mystery tote. This was totally unacceptable. I tried every product available to remove the ink. Remember this was back in the dark ages, when cable had 53 channels. So, the ink stain remained on my bag and on my mind..... One happy day, about 15 years after the stain had settled in, I found a website from a place called "A Compleat Mystery Bookshop" in one of those Red Sox states, and they had my tote for sale, at the expensive price of $19.95. Brand new, unopened and unstained! Imagine my joy. Was that really my tote? I dug through my closet and found the blue stained treasure. Yes they had new old stock. I bought it. Of course, now that I had unearthed my stained treasure, I took another stab at ink-removal. After all, we had 103 cable channels now, and sinks no longer came with washboards built into them, and cleaning products had evolved too. Sure enough, I got that stubborn blemish diminished enough to fearlessly use my bag again. Bottom line - the new bag was relegated to the closet. We just moved, and it has been unearthed, still in its plastic bag, unwrinkled, unfaded, with its price tag and all. Before it goes back in the black hole of my closet, here is your chance to love it, lug it, stuff it, and stain it for the next 20 years. Be mindful that prices have evolved too, and that the artist is deceased, and this is now totally collectible.... Be a Valentine, make somebody love you more for buying them a really cool Edward Gorey Tote bag :) 5 day auction! Bid now! Insurance will be mandatory. Shipping cost will be exact. No handling fees.
