Many Items to be listed are old pawn jewelery from 1920's to the 1960's. I inherited the Curtis from my Aunt but I remember it always hanging in my Grandfathers den/office. He was a Senior officer in the Forestry Service (He was an engineer & Lawyer) in Albuquerque, NM from about 1914 until he retired in the 1950's. He covered many of the Reservations on a regular basis and made many friends t He collected Native American pieces from Jewelery to rugs to pots, my Aunt shared his passion in this. I remember him telling me about the picture and that he had met Curtis several times and he admired his passion and representation. This picture was purchased by my Grandfather in the late 1920's-. EARLY 1930 I was told. It is all original, in the original frame and still sealed. It has the sticker on the back that says"Chas. E. Boldt, Picture Framing & Furniture, 114 West Gold St, Albuquerque, NM. This business was in business from articles I have found as early as 1912. This may not be the original frame but I do no that it has been in this frame since the early 1930's my Aunt told me. This picture is called the Vanishing Race, Navajo 1904 and is the most popular image by Curtis. The photograph offered is an Orotone, a photographic process w glass plate positive images are made by printing a reversed image on glass with a silver gelatin emulsion and then the plate is spresad with banana oil and impregnated with a gold powder. Many of the originals do not still exist because of the glass being broken or the backing loose so the pigment is damaged. This is in really fine condition, the frame has some age ware but the picture looks mint to my novice eye and still with the original family 3 generations later. The picture showing is 13.5 " X10.5". The frames outside 17.5" X 14.5". About Curtis: Curtis was commissioned by J. P. Morgan to document Native Americans before their lifestyles were changed by progress. Curtis photographically documented over 80 Native American Tribes with over 40,000 images, which was published between 1904-1928. T WERE ONLY ABOUT 2000 OROTONES OF THE VANSIHING RACE MADE BY CURTIS, HOW MANY STILL EXIST, IS ONE. Please excuse my photos but taking these pics without getting my reflection in the glass was a challange , also please excuse the dust, it didn't look so bad in the daylight.
