DESCRIPTION: A Total of Three yards and 30 inches in One Piece of Embroidered Cotton Lawn/Batiste in a Wide Border Design PLUS Two Yards of a coordinating Narrow Border on a Separate Piece. AGE and DESIGN: From the early 20th Century/Edwardian era. The photos have several different backdrops to show both the sheen and the sheerness of the base/ground cloth. Very soft and lightweight. The truest photo of the colors is the first one. While the design has stylistic hints of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement(1848 through roughly 1870's), I don't believe it is quite that old, mostly because they went in for heavier fabrics then. This is more like material used for the Tea dresses, At-Home gowns and Summer dresses worn during the those years before the First World War. The colors are soft and gentle: a medium blue, lilac, melon, white and off-white on an off-white cotton lawn/batiste. The stitches are hand-worked with a tambor(tambour) needle that produces a 'lazy-daisy' or chain-stitch effect, and t are French knots in white cotton floss for contrast. The design has elements of Celtic knot work (though simplified) at the border and the graceful tracery of Byzantine tiles at the upper sections. MEASUREMENTS: READ COMPLETELY! On the largest piece: while the lawn/batiste is Three yards and 30" inches long in Total, this piece has a 30" long section of the plain fabric that has some of its width missing and abuts( is attached to) another FULL WIDTH that is one yard long, making one yard and 30" of PLAIN material out of the three yards and 30" total. If this 30" long section were a separate piece I would list it as a remnant, but it is attached to the full yard of plain material and the worked/embroidered area. THIS "SHORTENED WIDTH" AREA DID NOT HAVE NOR HAS A DESIGN ON IT and is up at the non-worked section/part of the lawn. It is NOT near or next to the worked/embroidered section.. The DESIGNED/WORKED AREA: Each of the FOUR COMPLETED PANELS of embroidery featured on this cotton lawn/batiste measures just over 16" wide and the design extends 23" in length up the 48" width with another 1 3/4" plain material under the worked design at the border's edge. THIS MAKES a FULL TWO YARDS LENGTH of EMBROIDERED AREA on the FULL WIDTH of 48 INCHES, plus the one yard of the full width of unadorned fabric and 30" length of 'remnant' or reduced-width fabric for a total of three yards and 30". To reiterate: The Border DESIGN is 23" wide on 48" wide fabric and t are two full yards of this. T are an addition 1 yard, 30" of un-worked fabric attached. ALSO: A separate piece....... The narrow border (2 1/4" wide) (Photo #6) that coordinates with this cloth and came with it is worked on a 48" wide piece of the same fine cotton lawn/batiste. Please note: while the border (design) itself is two yards long, the base/ground cloth is only One yard long; that is, some of the un-embroidered material is missing from this piece. Or, put it this way..... Measurements: a ONE YARD length of the narrow border design is on a very usable 8" wide section of plain unadorned fabric, plus ONE YARD of the narrow border design continues uninterrupted and is on a 48" wide section of plain, unadorned fabric. This piece is UNCUT. You would have TWO YARDS of worked/embroidered border to add to your design, plus the plain fabric from both sections for the garment, i.e., the sleeves or bodice. This narrow border was probably designed for the cuffs or outlining the bodice. Photos # 10 and #11 show the shortened areas on each piece. Condition: remarkably good: one section at the outside edge of the border of the base cloth(lawn) is missing but the leaf part of the design is still present and is still attached...
