Exquisite French 18K gold pendant, decorated with guilloche and champleve enamels and centering a diamond-set platinum pansy. The gold disc is covered with translucent royal blue enamel over an engine-turned background. The disc is bordered in opaque white champleve enamel. The center features a platinum applique in the form of a pansy blossom encrusted with 39 rose-cut diamonds. The platinum setting has milligrained edges and is very finely worked. In the Victorian language of flowers, the pansy represented remembrance. The motif was particularly popular in France, where the word for "pansy" and "fond thought" are the same ("pensÃf©e"). A piece such as this pendant would have been given as a love token. The pendant is hallmarked with the French "tÃfªte d'aigle" hallmark for 18K gold. Origin: France, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, no enamel damage. Size: 13/16" diameter. Weight: 3.5 grams. Approximate Total Diamond Weight: .25 carat.
