The ancient Etruscans of Italy were the first to be historically linked to the intricate creation of filigree jewelry. Their skills were soon to be extended to their Roman conquerors and spread throughout all regions of occupied lands. Several thousand years later, the remarkable traits of ancient Etruscan filigree craft could still be realized in the original place of origin. The Italian filigree craft was one much sought after by monarchs of the Hapsburg and Austrian Hungarian Empires. The item presented in was created during the Austrian Hungarian Empire's reign in the ancient port town of Trieste. At the time of its creation, Trieste was a part of Austria. Following the First World War it was returned to Italy (1919-1947) and from 1947-1953 absorbed by Yugoslavia ... and finally returned to its rightful Italian owner in 1953. This simple port town has had an amazing resilience in having survived such an array of controlling forces and this ability itself has no doubt contributed to its enduring creative spirit ... as represented in the incredible uniqueness of the creation displayed in. The pendant measures 3.25" (8cm) in total length, is composed of 5 separate sections being the filigree loop, the smaller square section, the linked filigree ball section(s), the main square/diagonal section, and the intricate spiral dangle section(s). Widest span is a tad over 1.5" (4cm). The incredulous detail of the pendant includes 1) the main 4 petal flower centers with larger one adorned with a 4 petaled uplifting flower, 2) the hollow filigree balls linking the larger and smaller main sections, 3) the intrinsic delicate gold coiled spirals which dangle from the main section, 4) the sash-like filigree loop and the fact that each of these details are hallmarked! Hallmarks are on each link, loop, petal, spiral coil, border edge and loop. Truly amazing authenticity! The Certificate of Authenticity (Osvedceni) is from the Assay Office of Prague. It is in Czech but overall translates to the hallmark of "AV" (Austria - Vienna - Austrian Hungarian Empire) the 800/100 silver, the gold over silver; the dimensions, and the Assay Office's stamp. The hallmark page refers to the AV mark and years in which it was used (1866 - 1902). The " M" designating its creation in Trieste ( Terst in Czech). The illustration number 235 designates that between 1901-1902 a mark related to the traditional AV mark was added for export. Base of pendant is of 800 silver. It is entirely overlaid with 22K gold and weighs a total of 8.7 gm. It was created for a lady of nobility of the Austrian Hungarian Empire's elite court and has remained in the family's possession since. It has endured the 2 major world wars, 2 major siege conflicts, bombings, ship explosions, train derailments, and even a hiding place beneath the soil. It has remained as impeccably perfect as the day it was created. Breathtakingly Beautiful. Brilliantly Beckoning From Prague with love! @@@@@@@ Seller charges a flat fee of $6.00 for airmail, certified and insured postage and handling to all points. Final sale is void of all taxes.
