Edwardian Sterling Ornate Repousse Footed Vase Spooner

Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd English Sterling Silver Circa 1901 Incredible Edwardian Footed Vase or Spooner Detailed Floral Repousse with Highly Detailed Shell Feet Excellent Condition with Superb Oxidation This spectacular piece of sterling is hallmarked with the London, England assay marks of a lion, leopard head and the 1901 year mark of "f". The piece also bears the maker's mark "G&S Co Lo" and on the bottom, is further marked by the makers with "Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd - 112 Regent St". How's that for a nice address! At 5" tall and 4 1/4" wide with a deep basin, this piece is appropriately scaled as either a vase or spooner. I've also seen similar pieces called a "cauldron" in Europe. To give you a sense of scale, I've included a photo of the piece used as a spooner (see last photo - the 7 1/2" iced tea spoons are not included in this auction but will be listed separately later). The piece weighs just a bit under 9.5 oz and features a delicately crimped rim and a body quite elaborately adorned with deep relief floral repousse and 3 Baroque shell feet. The oxidation on the piece is incredible - crisp, even and well defined. I doubt this vase has ever seen a tarnish dip and hopefully it never will. It deserves the same lavish care that it has obviously received in the past. The piece has a few pin head size dings that you really have to hunt down as they are well camouflaged by the crimping on the rim and the repousse on the body. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition with only very light overall surface scratches indicative of infrequent and gentle usage. T are no other gouges, dents, dings or repairs and both pieces are perfectly stable and structurally solid. T are no monograms either. The vase or spooner is very shiny and needs perhaps just one more light swipe of polish to be perfectly brilliant and ready to grace your holiday table. These items are all part of a truly amazing lifetime collection of antique sterling and silverplate that I will be offering over the next 2 months. I estimate t are well over 150 items spanning the entire range of silver design - from whimsical and naturalistic to crisp Irish design. They belong to a wonderful couple who started collecting back in the early 80's and were early and enthusiastic sponsors of the Dallas Museum of Art's exceptional silver collection. They are preparing to move into a retirement community, and it's now time to share their treasures with some lucky new collectors.
