A great skeleton from an American Eel, Anguilla rostrata. These freshwater eels spawn in the Sargasso Sea, and the leptocephalus larvae then swim and drift thousands of miles before they ascend freshwater streams to mature. They differ from most other eels in that they possess small scales embedded in their skin. Their range runs from Greenland to the Guianas. This skull has a mouth full of sharp, retrograde teeth!
