An Egyptian Bronze Statuette of NefertumCULTURE / REGION OF ORIGIN: Dynastic EgyptDATE: Third Intermediate to Ptolemaic Period, 1,069 BC - 30 BCDIMENSIONS: 8.5 cm (3.35in.) tall; 13 cm (5.12 in.) with standDESCRIPTION: A large and well preserved Egyptian bronze figurine of the god Nefertum, part of the Memphite Triad of deities. The figure strides with the left foot forward, hands held closely to the sides, wearing the divine beard and the large open lotus and plumes crown. Part of the large suspension loop broken away, part of the lotus crown on the right side broken away, and a casting flaw to the left leg; otherwise intact with well preserved dark green surfaces and paler highlights in the recessed areas. The figure has a small integral base and is secured to the dark wood stand with brass wires that run over this base and run through the underside of the wood blockPROVENANCE: Formerly in the private teaching collection of Professor Jack Martin Balcer (1936-2004). Professor Balcer taught at Ohio State University for over 30 years. Known as "Dr. B" by generations of students, Balcer's research focused principally on the Athenian Empire, Greek numismatics and the cultural interactions between Greeks and non-Greeks in Western Asia Minor.
