The Scythian stag from which this piece of jewelry is adapted as found mounted on a round shield in it owners barrow. It was possibly the personal badge of a high chieftain or more likely the totem animal of a clan. Though resting, the stag raises his head as if alerted by approaching danger. The impression of latent power is strengthened by the swirl of his magnificent antlers, both deadly weapon an dcrown-like ornament, rendered like coiled springs. The contour of the figure with its combination of smoothly curving planes and sharp ridges suggests that this impressive art style was derived from wood-carving techniques.
