's a nice and very hard-to-find, straight-sided London ale-pint mug by John Townsend, dating from the second half of the 1700s. OP 4795 Very good/fine, cleaned and polished condition. This example is an export piece, sold to the American market either just before or shortly after the Revolution. Note the very early use of the "attention" handle terminal, which became more prevalent in the next century. In addition to Townsend's "pot" touch on the inside bottom, it also bears his characteristic crowned "WR" mark--a capacity indicator used by several London makers and others in reference to an act of 1688--i.e., during William III's reign, standardizing liquid measures for ale and wine. [See Peale, Pewter of Great Britain, pp. 68-69.] On mugs and tankards it is generally used for those of ale capacity, as in this instance.Payment by check or money order preferred. Paypal accepted. Seven-day, no quibble, purchase price return guarantee, less $15 shipping and insurance charges. Please email with any questions.
