Eilat Stone (chrysocolla and malachite and turquoise) is a blue-green copper bearing stone. It was originally mined from the Timna copper mines, which were just north of the northern end of the gulf of Aqaba, in what was then called Edom, just south of Moab. There were two other mines in the area at Feinan and Punon; these three are commonly called "King Solomon’s mines", and were north of the present city of Eilat. These mines flooded back in the 70's and were never reopened due to the decline in the market for copper. Eilat, the southernmost city of Israel, is located on the northern shore of the Red Sea. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, Eilat was a fort protecting the southern border of the empire against incursions of nomadic Arabian tribes. In the Middle Ages, the region became important as a crossroads for Muslim pilgrims en route to the Hejaz and its holy cities, Mecca and Medina.
