THIS ITEM: a large console table, dining table, or conference table, from the early 20th century, built around 1927, in a heavily carved rococo style with elaborate base, hidden drawer and side extension leaves. This one is an outstanding find and extremely unusual, a mammoth 5-feet long on a heavily carved and pierced trestle base. A really great design, but even better is that it has hidden leaves with an interior mechanism that allows the user to pull one side, which mechanically pushes the opposing side out at the same time. It is so fluid and easy to use! The top is gorgeously decorated in a butterfly pattern with the best woodgraining in satinwood. One hidden drawer on one side, velvet-lined and divided. Fabulous and elegant carved legs, the best! Signed and labeled B. Altman, New York- this is probably not the manufacturer, but rather a high-end retailer and showroom in New York City. A separate brass label inside the leaf on one side has patent markings and dates of March 1927. Maker unknown, but you probably could find out if you searched hard enough. WE LIST THIS ITEM WITH SOME FINISH OPTIONS, AND SOME CURRENT IMPERFECTIONS AND FLAWS. IT IS AVAILABLE PAINTED SHABBY-CHIC-STYLE, REFINISHED/REFINISHED/RESTORED AS NEW, OR AS-IS/AS-FOUND. SEE BELOW. Some illustrations: Graining on the top of this is fabulous!Beautiful carved accent panels on the apron. Incredible carved base!! Look at these huge carved feet: Not your typical small-scale applique! Beautifully and articulately executed in grand "Gatsby" New York style! Cross-stretcher, pierced & very elegant. Pull one side, and they both glide outward, and push in slightly til they slide into place together for one large, wider top. A novel space saver for its day! Handle-less drawer remains hidden, blending into the design. Built-in dividers and original velvet-lined compartments. I t is just gorgeous!! Boy, do I wish I had another diningroom for this one!! Ill ustrations of the mechanics underneath, and labels and markings. The B.Altman, New York, label has the script used in the late 1920s and is made of celluloid, a very early plastic-type material pre-dating bakelite. The piece is LARGE, and heavy! This was a high-end piece for its day, and still is today, not your typical average diningtable, and probably made by one of the more well-known and important manufacturers of the time. This would be great either restored in any wood tone finish or painted up and distressed shabby-chic fashion with our professional custom paint jobs. We have not done anything to it as yet, but we can't wait to get started! That's w you folks come in!Tell us how you want it!! We are willing to either strip & refinish, or paint it in another color to suit your taste, or if you're a do-it-yourself-er or a dealer/restorer, you may wish to purchase as found. Until we get around to it, it's available for you folks to order as you see fit! Can be used as it is, but has an obvious wealth of possibilities! Whether you use it as-is, have us restore it, or do it yourself, the potential is obvious! Provenance: This table was part of the original interior decoration for the Divine TracyHotel, on 36th St. between Market and Chestnut Sts in Philadelphia. This was a historic landmark in operation from the 1950s until just last year when the Divine Ministries closed the hotel and sold the building, which is being redeveloped for condos and student housing. A hotel since it was built in the 1890s, Divine Ministries purchased and renovated it in the mid 20th century, beautifully decorating many of the uppermost rooms individually, as well as the common spaces, in extremely high quality, name-brand, and unusual, eye-catching vintage furniture. More information on the history of Divine Ministries and their impact on the City of Philadelphia and the nation can easily be found by searching the internet. You may have heard of the Divine Loraine Hotel, their larger and more famous ente...
