Elegant Etched Cut Glass Compote with Ornate Silver Liner Silver depicts classical or Adam-style design Good Condition 11" x 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" Provenance: 1986 Auction: One Portland Place, St. Louis, Mo Otto Erker Estate This three-story, ashlar limestone mansion is an exercise in historicism evoking the eighteenth-century French architect Anges-Jacques Gabriel. The dignity of the house derives from its monumental proportions, the uniformly high quality of its ashlar stone facing, and the crisp and and corredct rendering of its architectural details. The contents of 4th owner Otto Erker was auctioned off by Selkirks, an antique auction house begun in St. Louis in 1830. In a rare move, which illustrated the quality of this mansion and its contents, Selkirks held the sale "in sutu" or on site. People flocked from all over the world to attend this 1986 sale. I bid on this and won.
