Mid 1800's inlaid rosewood writing box in VERY fine condition. Measures approximately 14" x 9" x 5". NO MISSING OR REPLACED VENEER INSIDE OR OUT. Unspoilt patina. Even colour to all aspects with attractive grain. Solid rosewood slightly rounded edges. The combination of pewter bands and Mother of Pearl inlays was extremely popular throughout much of the 1800's. The majority of boxes tended to use the pewter bands in straight lines, more often than not with the Mother of Pearl positioned at the corners and sometimes mid points of the banding. This box offers a slight variation insofar that the banding is both straight AND curved giving the box an appearance reminiscent of the Georgian style of inlays. Apart from one TINY piece of replaced Mother of Pearl to the top right front corner (doubt it would be noticed if not stated or examined closely), ALL of the inlays are original and in excellent condition. The roundels are pierced, indicative of the period. Hinges, sliding slope clasp and lock in fine condition with a working 'period' bow ended key supplied. The matching pair of flip top inkwells and quill pen are not included but are available as an optional extra though they are frequently available on eBay. The underside of the sloe fall has a network of webbing to retain notes etc. The webbing has been replaced EXACTLY following the design of the original webbing and all bar one of the fixing studs are original. A replacement leather slope surface has been professionally replaced, the gilt embossed borders and corner motifs complementing the rosewood veneer and brassware beautifully. An excellent looking wring box, circa 150 years old in a condition that would be difficult to top.
