P U T N A M London: Longman and Co., 1846, illuminations by Owen Jones, 10 x 7 inches, "relievo" binding in full, elaborately sculpted calf ( holly motif and other floral decorations on both front and rear), all page edges gilt, condition VG with some wear to extremities of binding, no tears, very little foxing, light stain (c. one inch) to many pages at top near spine. This is a superb Victorian edition of one of the best loved poems in the English language, the celebrated Elegy of Thomas Gray.� An early chromolithographic book by master illuminator and book designer Owen Jones,� the text is in gothic script with the initial letters and borders of leaves and vines blocked in gilt, red and blue.� Using his mastery of chromolithography, Jones's goal was to reproduce the style of illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, a style he greatly admired.This book is discussed in the classic work on books of this period,� Ruari Mclean's Victorian Book Design and Colour Printing : In 1846 Longman published Gray's Elegy, illuminated by Owen Jones: the first secular book wholly illuminated by him, the first with the name of a New York publisher (Wiley & Putnam) on the title-page as well as that of the English publisher, and
