About 50 miles south of Dallas is the city of Corsicana, Texas. The city has its place in history, since it was the first county seat formed after Texas joined the Union in 1845 (the original county is now ten Texas counties--including the county w Fort Worth is located!). Some of the major cattle trails passed near the city, and John Wesley Hardin taught school just south of town, before he became a gunfighter. It was also the first location in Texas to have commercial strikes of oil. (In 1894, the city needed to improve its water supply, so it drilled three wells--and struck oil with all three!) Both Texas Oil Company (now Texaco) and Magnolia Oil Company (now Mobil) started from t Drillers trained in the Corsicana fields drilled the Spindletop gusher that started the Gulf Coast Texas oilfields. In 1895, a ranch cook began bringing his chuckwagon into town on weekends, and he would sell chili from the back of his wagon beside the Blue Front Saloon. He had a pet wolf that he kept in a cage on the wagon, so he named his product Wolf Brand Chili.
