ELIZA BARCHUS LEWIS & CLARK EXPO PAINTER ADVERTISING BROCHURE. This two sided folding brochure measures 10 1/2" by 5 1/2" when fully opened. Eliza Barchus is one of Oregon's most famous painters. As a woman and a single mother, she managed to support her daughter and herself with her painting. A woman of great talent, she sold her paintings, bartered her paintings and taught painting at a time when women who painted did so to amuse themselves, not as a means of making a living! Barchus enjoyed a national reputation for her talents. She exhibited and won awards at the Mechanics' Fairs of 1887 and 1888 and the National Academy of Design Exhibition in New York in 1890. At the Lewis and Clark Exposition in 1905 she was awarded a gold medal and her talent was recognized and her fame spread. This brochure was printed after the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition. As a struggling artist, Barchus lived a thrifty life. This advertising brochure, demonstrates that fact. The label stating that her work was for sale at The Art Craft & Curio Shop covers another location. When held to the light a Shrine logo appears.
