We offer you something a little different for the Holiday Season!This is a medallion of the 1997 Breeders Cup Sprint Winner Elmhurst. Approximately 4" square in size, this resin piece was sculpted by Morgen Kilbourn especially for Our Mims Retirement Haven. A group of unpainted and unfinished Elmhurst medallions were handed out to some very special artists and donated back in their finished states. Auctions for these medallions begin tonight. There are a total of 8 medallions being offered in this group with one medallion offered every 3 days. The photo does not show it, but there is a loop in the mane that will allow a ribbon to be run through and the medallion hung like an ornament. Cindy Evans finished this particular medallion. His arrival was the achievement of a promise kept. Elmhurst is a grandson of Our Mims, the Haven's namesake. His greatest career achievement is, of course, the 1997 Breeders Cup Sprint where he surged from last to first at 16-to-1 odds to win the race. She raced in 1977 and 1978 and was retired to Calumet's broodmare band after an injury sustained in her last race. Probably her best know offspring are Slewvescent (by Seattle Slew) and Mimbet (by Raise A Native).When Calumet's horses were dispersed in 1991, Our Mims was also sold. Jeanne adopted Mims through a local rescue and brought the mare to her own farm. Mims lived out her life surrounded by love, fans, and peppermints while making appearances at various local events.
