This a lovely old bicycle that would have been made in Barton on Humber in about 1951. Given its age it is in remarkably good condition and is ready to ride away. It would have been a high quality machine of its day because it's makers had so much faith in it that it was sold with a fifty year guarantee.yes thats right fifty years. It was owned probably from new by Appleyard Motors of Leeds and was used to collect sandwiches for the staff lunch apart from other general duties. The guy I bought it from said that it was on display in their showroom after it ceased being used. I imagine that it was at this time that it was resprayed because you can see evidence of some surface marking under the paint, Unusually for a bike of this type the framework around the basket is removable by undoing two nuts and bolts, allowing it to be ridden as a normal bike. The basket is not any old basket, it is angled at one side to suit the shape of the frame and might even have been the original one supplied with the bike.My internet research has revealed a hopper price list which gives it a price new of £16-7s-7d which was about two weeks wages for the average working man at that time.I will be happy to supply any further information on request.
