“The Elusive Truth” - DELUXE LIMITED EDITION - SIGNED By Damien Hirst Published by Gagosian Gallery , New York, 2005. LIMITED EDITION / 1st EDITION Damien Hirst's exhibition “The Elusive Truth”, which was accompanied by this catalog, marks an evolution in style for the controversial artist. He uses the familiar icons – medicine cabinets, colored pharmaceutical pills, skulls, and the tools of dissection – but Hirst is not to shock. He presents us with an overwhelming sterility that reflects a claustrophobia which seems to increasingly pervade our daily existence. Nothing is more sterile and claustrophobic than a hospital, and so we see a narrowing hospital corridor, all low ceilings, muted tones, and the brutality of fluorescent lighting. The personal influence and power of sedatives is addressed in his “Two Pills” painting, with its gleaming glass and, again, fluorescent lighting seductive sterility. Hirst has previously associated drugs with the similarly calming force of religion, famously the “opium of the masses”. Again, Hirst does not seek to shock, simply to highlight and make it clear that t is a choice in life – we just need to be conscious of it.
