A True Account of the Embassy to the Emperor of China Undertaken by Order of the King of Great Britain
Including the manners and customs of the inhabitants, and preceded by an account of the causes for the embassy & voyage to China. Abridged principally from the papers of Earl McCartney, as compiled by George Staunton, Bart Published by John Stockdale, Piccadilly, Oct. 12, 1797. First 8vo edition. This is an abridged edition of the official account of the first English diplomatic excursion to China, published same year as 3-volume first edition. Great Britain was eager to open trade with China, but the Chinese resisted Lord McCartney's diplomacy and gifts. Although the mission failed, book is of considerable interest owing to its descriptions of flora, fauna, places and way of life in China in the late 18th C. 475 pages plus errata, directions for binder and publisher's ads. 25 engraved plates, plus frontispiece and, 2 folding maps of China . The plates, many of which are by William Alexander, include flora, fauna, people, views of China. Corners bumped and spine end broken. Foxing throughout. Split at first signature. Two loose pages. Signed in ink - Wm Abington - top of title page. Damage is no more than may be expected for a volume more than 300 years old. One would expect it to be in lesser condition.
