This SONS OF THE REVOLUTION medal is about 1 3/4 inches long and 1 3/16inches wide. It weighs 24 grams. It is not marked but itis we guaranty this fact!!
Philadelphia jeweler Joseph Bailey was a member of this very exclusive high fraternal group, I'm sure that is why his company produced these beautiful badges. The Bailey, Biddle and Banks signature can only be found on their highest quality gold, silver and enameled pieces.
The medal has a fantastic eagle on top. In the front border it is suppose to have 13 stars set in scalloped enamel rim to symbolize the 13 original states but unfortunately one star is missing but I'm sure this one star can be easily replaced. The center portrait has a colonial army soldier inside an oval frame. The date 1776 appears at the bottom of this frame.
The oval frame on the back has a bust profile of George Washington. The profile is encircled formed letters which spell "Sons of the Revolution." The Bailey, Biddle and Banks mark is on the back of the eagle on one wing is the number 2911 on the other wing is what looks like 491/ E 6 or 56. I think these serial numbers may indicate that the recipient is the 2911th person to receive the medal and maybe even a military unit I'm sure that these numbers have a larger story connected to them! such as dates of issue and possibly name and location of the recipient of this fantastic medal but I have no way to check these facts. This auction will be started at less than scrap weight prices but we do reserve the right to pull the auction if it gets to w t is a possibility of sniping, it's a beautiful piece and we feel it deserves a fair and reasonable price.
