Forged iron, very similar to example 5.PA in Neumanns Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, but with a more intricate pattern of pierced heart and kidney shapes. As with the example in Neumanns, there is a collar integral with the blade through which the spike passes. This construction is also found on colonial period American halberds. Square section spike with turned baluster and ferrule. Mounted with side straps on original round section hardwood shaft featuring original conical base shoe. Metal with old stabilized rust pitting, but generally very good. Tip of spike slightly bent. Wood and metal both darkly patinated. Length of metal parts 28 ", overall length 86 ". A very attractive and rarely encountered halberd used by the Royal Artillery during the mid 18th Century. A similar example also exists in the Kretzschmar von Kienbusch Collection.
