Medium sized DUNHILL DR C straight prince 13008 SHS [700] / 375 FROM A EUROPEAN ESTATE COLLECTION of DUNHILL DRs I am privileged to share many high grade Dunhill DR straight grains from the estate of a European businessman who had an appreciation for the very finest of pipes. In his world travels he sought after the most costly and exquisitely grained Dunhill Dead Roots during the golden era of the 1960s, and he smoked these pipes lovingly until his death in 1990. He was a private man and unpretentious, and his widow and children asked that I not publish his name. Over future months I will be offering the pipes from his estate, and you may agree with me that he amassed possibly the finest collection of DRs in the world and very well may have owned a monopoly of the DR G and DR H in the 1960s. This outstandingly grained DR was graded C when it was carved in 1961, early in the decade when Dunhill did their best work with the finest briar. Although it is a C, its quality and consistency of straight grain is easily as good as on any DR E or DR F from the same era. And I'd have to say it is the best straight grain I've seen on any bowl of this shape. True straight grain running top to bottom is almost never achieved on a round bowl like this one. It was lovingly maintained and delicately smoked by its single remarkable owner (see sidebar). He probably purchased it in 1961 at the Dunhill shop in London. We received this Dead Root Dunhill in excellent condition, and my talented son Max gently brought it to perfection so that the winner will receive a pipe that is ready to smoke and looks like a new one. It is light of weight, with a fishtail mouthpiece. It has no toothmarks and a perfectly sound and smooth tobacco chamber. The pipe will come in a black leather Dunhill drawstring sleeve.
