Old English Majolica Pitcher Approx Measurements 9 1/4"H by 7"Body 4 3/4"base Weight 2lbs 11.4oz Unidentified mark under glaze This is an exquisite pitcher. Large, tall, exquisitely decorated, and glazed. Came from an extremely well-appointed family estate auction held in the Midwest and is part of a larger collection of Majolica purchased. Owner truly loved her Majolica, and took great pride in caring for her entire collection spanning over 40 years. She was not a dealer, but rather, a private collector who found joy and beauty in Majolica Art Pottery. I admired her for this. I guarantee all pieces I am listing to be old and authentic and this is one piece from her collection. Certainly could use a soft cleaning which I have not done and am selling this piece exactly as purchased at auction. I am faaar from being a Majolica expert, but would date this pitcher to around the 1880s, perhaps later. English. Has wonderful Nouveau motif with hummingbird, butterfly, intertwining leaves and decorative scrolling . Banded basket weave around the body. Scalloped rim. Fabulous sprigging on handle. Ivory to tan ground with greenish tint. Walls are evenly shaped. Colours are crisp, vibrant, and glaze is uniform. Glaze application is outstanding. Bright, cheerful, and artistic. Chocolate-mocha mocha browns, pinks, yellows, and green. Slight crazing. T is a mark on the bottom base which I am unable to identify and an old remnant of a sticker. I am hoping someone will recognize this piece either by its shape, form, or distinctive decoration, who can offer gentle guidance as to the maker. The condition is superb for its age. T are no repairs to the piece but t are two stress splits on either side of the handle which I photographed. Have been t for a long time. They are smooth with age. T are no other chips or unwarranted marks (as if that's not enough) to this piece that I can detect. However, using a loupe, t may be a few undetected glaze flecks or glaze pops which I have not detected. Pitcher feels extraordinary to hold in your hand. Is extremely well-balance, proportional, and the handle contours perfectly around your grip. Has that wonderful earthen-ware feel of good early Majolica. Porous but not brittle to the touch. Just think this is an exceptional and lovely piece. Warm and rich. Think it would make an exceptional addition to any collection of Majolica or Art Pottery. It's truly a stunning piece. Just has soul. If you have any questions or wish additional pictures, I am happy to assist. I shall wrap your Majolica pitcher with extreme care and ship it to you within one day. The new owner is to pay $16.00 for Fully Insured USPS Priority Shipping within the United States. I will gladly combine Shipping on any of the Estate majolica listed. All my THANKS! GOOD LUCK! All Cheers, a-
