~ RARE ENGLISH MOCHAWARE CATS EYE & EARTHWORM MUG/TANKARD c1810 ~ ~ RARE ENGLISH MOCHAWARE CATS EYE & EARTHWORM DECORATED MUG/TANKARD c1810 ~ ~ Excellent Condition/Gorgeous Decoration ~ ~ NO RESERVE/FREE SHIPPING ~ You're bidding on a fine example of antique English Mochaware dating to c1810. This is a very rare 4 3/4" tall tri-coloured Cat's Eye and Earthworm decorated mug or tankard offered with no reserve and free shipping in the USA. It stands on a pedestal-type base with a turned sharp and smooth concave ring. As you probably know, examples of early English Mochaware with this form and extravagant decoration are seldom if ever offered in regular auction format. IF you can find a similar piece, you'll find them offered in Buy It Now listings of $1800.00 and up! Fresh to market from a long standing estate collection, this is a genuine original period piece. The mug/tankard features a wonderful applied handle with typical foliate terminals. The handle was applied after the body was decorated by "engine turning". The decorations were applied with a tool of the period known as a slip cup while the body was turned. They had to be applied while the body was still wet to create the desired effect. The tri-colored Cat's Eye and Earthworm decoration were applied in a stunning repeat design. The two decorations were done in the same matching three color combination; cream, blue and black. The tri-coloured Cat's Eye decoration was placed at each curve of the Earthworm decoration. The Earthworm decoration was done in a constant curving and flowing pattern around the middle of the mug/tankard over a wide 3" sienna background band. It is made up of dozens of the same tri-coloured circles layered one over the other. As it was applied, the Earthworm decoration picked up some of the still-wet sienna background, blending with the other colors and creating a lightly swirled almost agate-like effect. The abundant decorations and sienna band are bordered at both top and bottom by a 5/8" blue band, each of which have narrow dark brown band borders at the top and bottom of the tankard. This extremely rare and highly sought after English Mochaware mug/tankard is in excellent condition having no chips, fleabites, cracks or repairs. No repairs were evident under a blacklight. The abundant decorations remain wonderfully glossy and bright. T's also one superfine 1/2" surface hairline at the top inside of the rim and one at the left front side surface of the piece. Neither line goes through to the other side and neither can even be felt with a fingernail. T is one small lightly bubbled area on one side of the tankard done at time of manufacture. T is very light wear around the rim of the tankard. The 3 1/2" diameter pedestal base is excellent with only some light age staining and light blue pooling of the glaze typical of early English Mochaware. T is the expected light glaze crazing throughout the piece consistent with it's extreme age of around 200 years! Early English Mochaware with a combination Cat's Eye and Earthworm decoration is extremely didfficult to come by and highly sought after by collectors. Finding a piece in this undamaged and unrepaired condition is about impossible. In addition, you never see a piece like this in a regular auction with no reserve! And shipping is free via USPS priority mail in the USA. This is your chance to own a fine rare example of antique English Mochaware with extravagant decorations...my special offering of the week! Insurance is optional and strongly suggested at my actual cost based on the final selling price. Please wait for invoice BEFORE paying! Thank you...
