eBay's largest sellers use AuctionLynxx to increase sales... shouldn't you? ~ ENGLISH MOCHAWARE SEAWEED DECORATED PINT MUG TANKARD c1850 ~ ~ No Reserve Auction ~ From the early 19th century comes this rare and highly collectible English Mochaware pint tankard. Stands 5" tall with a straight-sided cylinder shape and applied handle. The base coat is a white ground glaze both inside and out. This extraordinary piece features a wide 2 3/8" teal-colored middle band decorated with four seaweed designs resembling trees. Two narrow black bands border the top and bottom with a wide blue band just under the top rim. Etched on the bottom front is the word "PINT" in a semi-circle shape and under that are two underlined symbols I am unable to make out followed by the initials "C * R" and "18". Please see pictures for further detail. They were very hard to capture with camera! is a brief history of English mochaware in general: Also known as banded creamware or Leeds Ware, this pottery has become very desirable over the past five years or so. And it will only become more so as Mocha is a soft pottery and much has become broken, and of that left, many pieces are damaged and browned with usage. Sharpe's Pottery was one of the earliest pottery works to be built in the South Derbyshire district and very well could have made this very piece. It was founded in 1821 by Thomas Sharpe as a diversification from his main business of farming. Coarse domestic yellow ware in a variety of forms, including a decorated type known as "Mocha Ware", was produced in the early years. Yellow was the natural colour of the local clay when burnt and clear glazed. The mocha decoration resembled markings found in an Arabian quartz stone known as 'mocha' or 'moss agate', that was exported from Mocha or Al Mukha, a small town in Yemen on the Red Sea coast. Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks, fleabites or restorations. Some extremely light age crazing on the base only. No base wear. You will not find a finer piece. Dimensions: 5" high with a 3 1/4" diameter base. Top diameter also 3 1/4". Handle 3 1/2" long. English mochware is much sought-after by collectors and just one look tells you why. Each piece has its own unique characteristics and every one is beautiful to behold. Others start similar pieces at $320 opening bids and higher. I offer this piece with a ridiculously low open and no reserve. Please check my other auctions for a similar piece of English mochaware in a pedestal bowl...
