This beautiful chest of drawers was bought by my father in the 1960s in London, and probably dates from the late 1700s to early 1800s. He told me that the original butler's chests were used by the employees of large households to keep track of keys, personal items, and other accoutrements of their trade. They would also use the pull-down felt covered escritoire to keep up with correspondence. The dimensions are 64"T x 46"W x 24"D.The first two "drawers" are actually the faux front of the pull-down escritoire with a felt writing surface, and t are 7 smaller drawers inside of this, 3 left and 3 right, plus a cubbyhole in the middle with another drawer above that. Underneath are three large standard drawers of different sizes. The keyholes are inlaid ivory, and the hardware is brass. The surface is waxed and the mahogany has a fine patina.T is light wear and tear and surface scratching - but the chest is in good condition. It does need one or two minor repairs, like the reattachment of the felt on the escritoire, which has come loose in places. Also, t is a piece of veneer missing on the top left hand front corner. And the side trim on the right side of top of chest has also come loose. All of these pieces are in my possession and need only to be lovingly reattached.
