LATE 1800's ENGLISH ROSEWOOD & PEWTER INLAY LAP DESK / SLOPED WRITING BOX Original finish, mahoganey interior, equipped with 2 period pens (1 silver/quill?, 1 gold/rosewood), 3 nibs, and inkwell with"W T/F? & Co." on brass screw lid Exquisite example of ladies Victorian writing desk; six decorative pewter exterior inlays, key lock, brass hinges and blue (worn) velvet-covered bottom Stationery and envelope storage; burgundy (worn) velvet writing surface, and secret compartment* (two drawers) containing gold trinkets as found No maker marks except paper seal of dog head on top lid (see photo); 2 nibs are stamped: "D. Leonardt & Co., Ball-Pointed, H. Hewitts patent, England" Purchased 30 years ago from an antique shop in Maine; only cleaned and minor pewter repair since, never used; pull tab (letter box) missing - threaded base only One antique lap desk measuring (closed): 11"d. x 14"w. x 5.25"h. with 2 pens, 3 nibs, inkwell, key & assorted trinkets; weighing a total 7.4 lbs*Instructions for opening the secret compartment will be revealed to only the winning bidder after auction ends!
